Hello from Jon at Massage Marketing! I hope your year has gotten off to a good start.

How’s your practice doing? It looks like for the immediate future, we’re all faced with doing business in a shaky economy. If your practice is as busy as you could hope for, keep doing the same things that you’ve been doing. But be prepared to make adjustments to your marketing plans if things start to slow down.

Most therapists I’ve spoken with recently say that business remains slow, with many clients scheduling less frequently due to their financial situations. Since you’d like to be delivering more massages to your clients, and they would prefer to continue receiving their massages, the main question right now is how to make this happen.

So, what can you do now to boost your business? The first thing to consider is what steps you can take to increase appointments with your existing clients. You can assume that most of them already wish they could be getting massage more frequently.

With tight budgets being the rule of the day, you need to decide whether you’re willing to do some creative marketing to get these folks back on your table more often. For instance, if you’ve been getting $60 an hour, would you be willing to offer your services to some of your loyal clients for $45-50 an hour—if they came to see you every month? In other words, is it feasible for you to accept less per hour in these tough times for a guaranteed number of visits?

If so, you could test the waters by calling a few of your clients and discussing such an offer, letting them know you really want to find a way to continue helping them regularly—to come up with a plan where you can both benefit.

Or what about offering a referral special—maybe $45 per massage (for both your client and their referral) when a client refers a friend and they both schedule in the same week? Each therapist’s situation is different, so you have to weigh the options and pursue a plan that works for you.

What about getting more new clients? Bringing in new business can breathe new life and energy into your practice. What have you done in the past to attract new clients? Do you have opportunities to speak to local groups, man a booth at a health fair, do some chair massages at an event, etc.? Review all of the ways you have brought in new clients in the past and see which options have worked best for you.

The bottom line is you need to contact enough people to fill your schedule and to provide a compelling reason for them to set their appointments. One vital element to your success is educating your public on the many benefits your services offer them. They are so much more likely to see you when they understand the value of massage to their health and well-being.

So what are your plans for gift certificate sales this season?

Focusing on gift certificate sales should be a seasonal project for you. If not, it’s time to incorporate it into your regular massage practice marketing plan.

Why You Ought To: During the Holidays is when you are more likely to be introduced by existing clients to new or potentially new clientele.

And, this is the time of year when people are wanting to buy.

Therefore, this is the time of year to focus on gathering new clients, revitalizing your practice and/or shifting your practice’s focus.

The easiest way to do this is to remind your clients that you have gift certificates for sale.

Give Your Clients a Reason: People buy for the Holidays. They just do. So if they’re going to spend money, why not spend it on something healthy and good?

Your clients need to be reminded of the benefits of your work. They need to be reminded that it is very simple to share your work with their family and friends.

Combat Massage Business Lethargy

Most massage therapists know it’s important to keep in touch with their clients. Constant client contact is a crucial part of the marketing plan.

In all honesty, this well-intentioned activity is spasmodic at best. Giving your clients holiday cards is great, but what about the monthly check to see which of your clients is celebrating a birthday? We tell ourselves it can be done later, but later never comes.

The way to combat massage business lethargy is to have a calendar. When you design your schedule in your calendar, make sure you include when and how each person (or group of people) will be contacted. The most effective way for massage therapists to keep on top of contacting clients is to have a good, working system in place and, ideally, one that’s easy to follow. The system should be as automated as possible.

Marketing tools for keeping in touch with clients

There are a variety of different marketing tools small-business owners can use to keep in touch. Here are just a few ideas.

E-mail newsletters, or e-newsletters, are a great way to communicate with a large group of people. There are a number of great online resources available for e-newsletter creation and management. Use e-newsletters to provide product information, such as fitness products or essential oils, and to promote special events.

The most important part of any marketing system is for it to be utilized regularly. If you are busy or have a hard time working with schedules, you are better off hiring someone to help you. If you have extra help, such as a friend or family member that can write e-mails and even sign holiday cards for you, then a lot of your work is done. You can even hire a secretarial service to assist you, which leaves you free to work on other areas of your massage business. Also, you can try using a virtual assistant. The marketing money you spend to outsource these routine tasks will be repaid many times over with new business you receive.

Remember, the key to a successful marketing system is to have it automated as much as possible. The less work you have to do, the more likely it is to be done on time, and the more likely you are to get referrals to your massage practice.

Just last week, one of my long-time newsletter clients sent me an email with a marketing program he started a couple of months ago. It’s proven very successful in bringing in lots of new clients, and he offered me the opportunity to share his bright idea with you!

Here’s the marketing program directly from Chuck:

I am doing an Economic Rewards and Stimulus Program for my clients. As long as this economic recession continues, I am offering 50% off a one-hour massage for all new clients. Then for all my current clients I am giving the below coupons to them. They put their name or initials on the back of the coupon, something I can recognize. Then as a new client gets a massage with one of the coupons I give credit to my current client ... for two coupons, a current client gets 50% off; for three coupons, a current client can convert the 50% off massage to a FREE massage.

As easy as one, two, three, my current clients can receive a FREE massage even during a recession, and I receive three new clients. The idea is to build up my new client base; I set my goal of 10 new clients a week, eventually building to 15 new clients a week. This will keep me busy, bring in some money even though it’s less than before (it’s like having a second job), build a new client base—it’s a numbers game—and hope that some will become regular clients. I’m doing advertising mostly via word-of-mouth, emails, and this Economic Rewards and Stimulus Program.

Results so far: 56 new clients since March 5th, almost all of them took coupons to give to their friends, relatives, hair salons, nail salons, anywhere and everywhere to earn massages. Friends tell friends, who will tell more friends. This client base becomes more and more an interactive family network of people interested in massage and a good deal. I used to pay $350 for a Yellow Pages ad that generated about 8-9 people a month, most of them were transient people staying in hotels, who I would never see again. My other advertising—small papers around town—were less productive, my cost for postage, printing, labor and time were too expensive. So I’m cutting expenses and building a new client base with sort of a “pyr amid” approach, which directly benefits all the clients, both new and current—a Triple Win, Win situation.

I am finding out that the more attention I give this program, the more success is being generated. The master key for success is to maximize the distribution of the coupons through your clients, let them be your promotion army.

Eventually, when the economy gets better and the recession is over, I will have created a BIG new client base, plus my older client base will start to return to get massages. Essentially, you are investing in a much brighter, prosperous future while in the midst of a heavy, dark recession.

Hello from Jon, and welcome to the April Behind the Scenes newsletter! First, thanks to all of you who responded to my pricing survey for my new release—the client education letter packages. With your helpful input, I’m now offering this new, very cost-effective promotional tool. Please read on to learn more.

With the current economy, everyone is looking for ways to save and get more for less. These new letters are my latest contribution to offer you a more economical way to promote your services and build your practice.

Quickly, the results of your feedback: Most of you who sent your price suggestions fell in the $4-6 per letter range, with a few suggesting less than $4 and a few suggesting more than $6. One valuable suggestion was to divide the client education letters into smaller packages, making them more affordable for more therapists.

With that in mind, I think you’ll really like what these new client letter packages have to offer you. For those of you who didn’t see my last e-newsletter, I’ve been looking for ways to offer valuable marketing materials to you more affordably. To that end, I’m introducing a new product—the client education letter. Each of these letters will contain the same content as my most popular print newsletters, but without the pictures and in a simpler layout. This allows you more ways to use the content.

Initially, I’ve created two packages of client education letters, each containing 12 letters. (See below for subjects.) One of these packages can provide you with regular marketing materials for one-two years.

These new packages are just $49.95 each—just over $4 per letter! You can save more by ordering both packages together for $89—save nearly $11!

The new client education letters are now in Word files and will be sent to you via the Internet. You can open a letter, type in your contact information at the beginning of the letter, and print as many copies as you need to use as ready-to-go handouts.

You can also copy any part or all of each letter and use the content for your practice website, for your own print- or e-newsletter layouts, for articles in your local newspaper, or anywhere else you want. Remember, the way you build business is to educate people and to attract attention to your services.

The most time-consuming part of creating really effective marketing materials is researching and writing the educational parts.
